try CREWING FOR ADULTS- NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Crewing is a fun, social way to get out on the water, learn new skills and meet like-minded people. Whether your goal is simply to spend more time on the water, explore ocean racing, cruise the Whitsundays, charter in the Mediterranean, or even sail around the world, our members have been there and are happy to share their experience.

When you arrive, one hour before a Friday twilight race, or two hours before a Saturday race, head to the clubhouse and we will match you with a skipper and a boat, and help you feel comfortable before heading out on the water.

Friday Twilight Racing
Twilight racing runs during summertime daylight saving (October to March). These short, social races are a fun way to finish the week and build your sailing skills. We sail on the sheltered waters of the Georges River and Kogarah Bay.

Saturday Bay Racing
If you'd like to experience the thrill of flying a spinnaker, join as crew for a Saturday afternoon bay race. Crew roles include trimming sails, a foredeck position, or simply enjoying time on the water. Try crewing on different boats and see if a casual or permanent crew position is a good fit. c

Cruising division

We have an active cruising division for those who enjoy relaxed social sailing. Once you're a member, let us know your sailing interests and goals and we'll help connect you with like-minded cruisers. A great way to gain experience and confidence before you buy your own boat.

What to wear and bring

You don’t need much to get started:


  • Trainers with white soles ( for example volleys)
  • A long-sleeved collared shirt
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Snacks and drinks
  • A spray jacket and an extra warm layer
  • Sailing gloves, if you have them
  • A change of clothes just in case
  • Most boats have space below decks for a small sail bag or soft
    Esky. 
  • Please leave jewellery and valuables at home.

Safety and onboard basics

When you step aboard, the skipper will give you a safety briefing, introduce you to the crew, and explain your role

Crew Roles

A crew member may have one of the following roles:

  • Skipper (helm)
  • Foredeck or bow
  • Main, headsail or spinnaker trimming
  • Rail crew

As a new crew member, you will be guided into a role that suits your experience. Instructions are simple, support is constant and you will learn on the water as part of the team. 

Experience and next steps

No prior experience is required to crew-being comfortable on the water is all you need to get started. This might include having had a few lessons, sailing as a child, or spending time on other boats.

Combining sailing lessons with crewing is a great way to build confidence and skills. As a BBYC member, you will also receive 10% off lessons with AusSea Sailing School.
