AUSTRALIA DAY @ Botany Bay Yacht Club
Join us for the Botany Bay component of the 176th Australia Day Regatta, proudly proclaimed as the oldest continuously conducted annual sailing regatta in the world.
Covering some 30 nautical miles after a handicap start from noon, the race circumnavigates Botany Bay passing every sailing club (and their fleets) to finish in front of the Club and the masses crowding Carss Bush Park – a finish that should not be missed. The tussle of the vast majority of the fleet trying to get that tiny bit extra to cross the line before the boats alongside provides quite a spectacle! Entry fee is only $20 – just turn up at the Club before 11 a.m. to register for this great event. Click here for a map of the course & Sailing Instructions.
Within the race is the Councillor’s Challenge Cup with representatives of the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils crewing on BBYC yachts, each striving to gain that prized Cup for display at their Council Chambers until the next annual Australia Day challenge.
Following the race (and the obligatory liquid debriefing session):
- The Families Afloat Judges will tour Kogarah Bay between 6 and 7 p.m. looking for the Best Dressed Boat, the Best Dressed Crew and the Best Flag Display.
- BBQ dinner at the Club. ($25 Adults, $10 Children, Family (2 adults, 2 children $60).
- Kogarah Council’s magnificent Fireworks Display (9p.m.) from just across the bay.
Australia Day – great family day, great family race, great views, great prizes, great socialising, great fireworks and great fun --- ALL available at Botany Bay Yacht Club Thursday 26 January, 2012.
